MARTIN PARR.

The Retrospective. Photographic works 1971 - 2001

May 6 - August 15, 2004 in the Northern Hall

Parr 1985

Martin Parr, born 1952 in Epsom, Surrey, is among the most influential photographers worldwide. His inimitable British gaze uncovers the banal and grotesque in the life of the middle class and our consumer society.

Parr uses the medium of photography as a mirror in which he reflects people both ironically and yet fondly.

The exhibition at the International House of Photography is the only venue in Germany and the first large-scale retrospective of Martin Parr, whose social documentary work has come to inspire countless young artists. Featured in the show are 300 works and several installations that are either autobiographical or critical of society. In addition to legendary series from Great Britain’s Thatcher era such as “The Last Resort“ and “Cost of Living“, the artist’s little known black-and-white work from the 1970s but also several new workgroups including “Common Sense“ and “Cherry Blossom“ will also be on display.

Since 1994, Martin Parr has been a member of the renowned photographic agency Magnum. This year Martin Parr was appointed artistic director of the international photography festival in Arles, Southern France.

To coincide with the exhibition at the International House of Photography, the German edition of a comprehensive catalogue will be published by Phaidon Verlag, Berlin for the price of Euro 29.95 (museum edition).

Following its stop in London the show could, amongst other places, be seen in the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid. After Hamburg it will move to the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris.

Curated by Val Williams. The exhibition was originated by the Barbican Gallery, London, the National Museum of Photography and Film & Television, Bradford. Organized by Magnum Photos and the agency Focus.

Publisher Gruner + Jahr is supporting and accompanying the Martin-Parr retrospective in the International House of Photography with various activities. In the foyer of the G+J building they will show an exhibition that focuses on the British photographer’s own comprehensive collection. In addition, on June 15, an entire issue of the magazine Stern (STERN SPEZIAL FOTOGRAFIE) will be devoted to Parr.
