VisualLeader 2006 – The Best of German Magazines

03.16.2006 – 05.28.2006

An exhibition of the LeadAcademy for Media Design

Photography, advertisements and announcements, online and editorial design – the exhibition that shows great accomplishments of the creative scene.

And they do exist indeed: gripping picture sequences, fascinating photos, original advertisements, creative websites. From March 16th to May 28th, 2006, the LeadAcademy for Media Design is showing „Visual Leader – the Best of German Magazines“ in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg.

The exhibition includes all of the works that were awarded the much coveted LeadAwards this year – Germany’s most significant print and online prize. Around 180 photo series, magazine contributions, ads and websites are on view. Altogether they convey a unique impression of the creative achievement potential of the German magazine and advertising industry.

„The German magazine landscape is better than its reputation,“ says Markus Peichl, Director of the LeadAcademy for Media Design which organizes the LeadAwards as well as the VisualLeader exhibition. “There are many more top achievements than one assumes. They simply founder in a flood of many interchangeable and arbitrary magazines. Our task is to filter out the outstanding photos, contributions and advertisements and to make them visible. When people come to the VisualLeader exhibition, they always astonishedly say: „ I had no idea how many great picture sequences and original ideas that one finds in German magazines.“

„VisualLeader – the Best of German Magazines“ is not just the largest exhibition of its kind in Germany, it also came about in a very particular way. Different than with other creative competitions, one cannot apply for the LeadAdwards. In fact, an independent expert jury thins out the entire year’s output of approximately 200 German magazines and searches out the prizeworthy works. These are then evaluated and judged by a main jury composed of prominent people. Thereby a fully independent as well as truly inclusive decision arises. Through this process, whoever receives gold, silver or bronze can justifiably claim to belong to the best of the best.

This year there are, on the one hand, contributions from young, up-and-coming, independent titles such as „Zoo“, „Monopol“, „Kid’s Wear“, „Achtung“ and „Dummy“. On the other hand, new, innovative journals from large publishing houses like „Neon“, „Park Avenue“ or „GQ“ as well as reinvigorated classics such as „SZ-Magazin“, „Amica“, „Mare“, „Vogue“, „Max“ or „Geo“. Markus Peichl: „The diversity as well as the quality of the editorial contributions have clearly increased this year. We haven’t had so many exciting works for quite some time.“

The exhibition „VisualLeader – the Best of German Magazines“ runs from March 16th until May 28th, 2006 in the House of Photography of the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, Deichtorstraße 1 – 2, 20095 Hamburg.

Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 18.00.
Entrance fee: Euro 5,00
Reduced entrance fee for groups of 10 persons up: Euro 3,00.

The LeadAwards and the exhibition „VisualLeader“ are supported by the Spiegel-Verlag, Getty Images, Hugo Boss, T-Online and the Free and Hansa City Hamburg / hamburgunddesign. The honorary member of the LeadAcademy is Mr. Horst Wackerbarth.
