What does photography mean today—and what might it become tomorrow? To mark the reopening of the Haus der Photographie at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, international artists, photographers, and scholars share their perspectives on the current state of photographic practice in the series (CON)TEMPORARY CONDITIONS: from new imaging technologies and changing viewing habits to questions of authorship, materiality, and responsibility. (CON)TEMPORARY CONDITIONS invites us to question existing notions and to rethink photography as an open, constantly evolving field.
Heba Y. Amin is a professor of digital and time-based art at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, co-founder of the Black Athena Collective, visual arts curator for the journal MIZNA, and currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Digital War. She was awarded the Hans Molfenter Prize/City of Stuttgart in 2025. In her artistic practice, Heba Y. Amin explores political themes and archival history. She works with various media, including film, photography, archival material, and installations. In her research-based art projects, she adopts a speculative, often satirical approach to address power in relation to technology and its role in visual representation. Through her critical practice, Amin employs subversive tactics and other techniques that both challenge dominant historical narratives and seek to define future stories.
