XAVIER LE ROY
RETROSPECTIVE

up

Hall for Contemporary Art 8 August — 25 August 2013

Over the past 15 years French choreographer Xavier Le Roy has decisively influenced contemporary dance: with conceptual austerity, a discursive, exploratory spirit and enigmatic wit Le Roy has altered our conception of dance. With RETROSPECTIVE Le Roy is presenting an exhibition, which was created in 2012 for the Antoni Tapiès Foundation in Barcelona and is conceived as a choreography: Nine dancers use parts of the solo choreographies of Xavier Le Roy, which were produced between 1994 and 2009. During opening times the dancers interpret these works for visitors to the exhibition in Deichtorhallen.

The entrance of visitors practically sets in motion a choreographic sequence and dialogs with the dancers. RETROSPECTIVE is an active process in which both the visitors and dancers generate their own knowledge and re-appropriate the works. RETROSPECTIVE thoroughly unhinges our perceptions of how theater and exhibition premises are seen, and sets the relationship of these two cultural institutions in motion.
