The Falckenberg Collection in the former Phoenix factory building in Hamburg-Harburg opened in 2008 and has been an integral part of the Deichtorhallen Hamburg since 2011.
Across more than 6000 square meters of space on five floors, it presents the private collection of Harald Falckenberg (1943–2023), whose focus is on German and American contemporary art since the 1980s.
The rooms of the listed factory building, which were renovated by the Berlin-based architect Roger Bundschuh, form the architectural backdrop for the collection. The cascading stairwell and the open design continually offer new perspectives on the artworks in the thematic and special exhibitions. The generous spaces allow for the ongoing presentation of impressive installations and multimedia projects by artists such as John Bock, Anna Oppermann, Thomas Hirschhorn, Mike Kelley, Jon Kessler, Jonathan Meese, and Gregor Schneider.
Since 2011, numerous solo exhibitions have been presented in the Falckenberg Collection, including Marilyn Minter (2011), Monica Bonvicini(2012), Santiago Sierra (2013), William S. Burroughs (2013), Philip Guston (2014), Gianfranco Baruchello (2014), Lynn Hershman Leeson (2015), Raymond Pettibon (2016), Hanne Darboven (2017), and Astrid Klein (2018).
A unique aspect of the exhibition venue is the storage facility with sliding racks, which allows visitors to gain an overview of the entire collection during exhibition tours and see works that are not currently on display.
